It's not fun, and every level feels the same. This game is a platform type, and platformers goals are too test your skill. There has to be some sort of finesse into playing and beating it. Your game requires basic motor skills at best, and the only reason I ever died was because of how bad your controls are. The controls are bad-by the way- because they make the character feel unnecessarily airy. I stayed in the air too much, and I couldn't jump very far, every single leap is unwarrantedly precise. I also lost desire to continue playing as I noticed every single level was nearly exactly the same. Another design flaw is the length of your levels. In my first game I happened to make the same mistake. Since not much is happening in your level it's boring to continue playing with little rewards, as well as the fact if you accidently die from your controls you have to painfully start over from the beginning, despite the fact that you know you could easily clear the level. Also the bragging on it taking you only 24 hours isn't impressive, because honestly I could make this game in about an hour, if not less, and I'm not even good at making video game. Lastly, I happen to use the same program as you. Stencyl. I hate it when people make games with water hazards and you don't fall INTO the water. To make it so you fall into it, just set the water on a layer above your character. That'll fix it.

I appreciate the feedback, I do have a lot more planned for the game such as collectibles, upgrades enemies and scoring. I will also re look at the controls and improve them. I did't know about the water thing either I will change that in my next edit.

I would like to mention the 24 hours thing isn't a brag more of a notification that it's not perfect and needs some work. This is my first game so i'm still learning (like the water layering).

I enjoyed the feel of it a lot. And it would be cool if there was quest based missions. I expected this game to feel somewhat like braid, or prince of Persia, but it didn't so good job on that. The only problem is I had difficulty wanting to use the time control pills. This game should be finished in my opinion.

Thanks man :)

This game was very good. Completely excellent. The only thing I'm dissatisfied with is that you slid seeds of conspiracy in there. Like a possible more fascinating plot, and it never game through. Which made me somewhat sad.

If you don't know what I meant, the conversations with the other group members made it almost seem like SOW was secretly evil, and the Idk what the money is for also hinted too that. Some things people outside said really made me feel fascinated. Now I'm not saying you should make a plot I think is more interesting, but I didn't like how it seemed like it should be there, and never came to light.
Cause I mean you REALLLLY made it seem like there might be a mystery.

JacksonLango responds:

For sure! Originally there was gonna be a mysterious conspiracy plot but I just ended up running out of time/energy to implement it.

The concept was nice but the execution was bad. I didn't feel like I controlled the character, there's just now way to play this game with skill and be good at it. Simply because of how limited the character is.

Also on a side note, your attempt at a story made me cringe in pain, I don't mean to be rude, but that was just very amateur. Try and stay away from awkward colloquialism in a story like that, and maybe avoid clichés. Your typography isn't very fitting either, the beginning font was very bad, and didn't get me hyped in the slightest. Also I had no idea during the opening screen I could press space to continue. Lastly the music is pretty good, but having lyrics in games is something I think most people would agree with as awkward.

MrReynevan2 responds:

Pretty thanks for your opinion ;)
I'll think about things you've suggested.

I'll start fixing it all ASAP :)

Mega Charlie, you're a good director. You get half a star for that. I like your art direction skills, but your game doesn't work, and I've checked other reviews to make sure it's just my computer. Don't put up games that don't work. What is wrong with you? That is inexscusable. One of your main complaints is "You try making a game." Well I have made a game. I've made a couple, most of them aren't on here, but I understand what programming is like. I understand youre having difficulties on this site, but that's what game development is, and if you can't understand that is hard-while accepting the difficulties- then you should be ashamed to call yourself a developer. I love people on Newgrounds that say my games suck and tell me why. Lemme just tell you, those people saying you suck is the best gift you can have in life. You'll never get better with out them.
I do love your directing though. Make a good game. Think hard, try hard, and I look forward to your next game. I'm going to fan you, so make an awesome game alright!

Megacharlie responds:

Ok :) thanks for the unmean comment i am curently updating so it will be updated soon and hopfully it will work this time. also have you noticed the art one the sides of the game pages? well im making a game called pixels about that character so look out for that game somtime next week. thanks again bye.

I thought it was very good. I think people may have found the game too slow in the beginning though, maybe make the background speed by to add speed?

EereeStudio responds:

That's a neat idea. I'll keep it in mind :). Thanks for the suggestion and review!

It was slightly interesting, but I didn't like it too much. I've played very good games like these and this one wasn't clever, it was just kind of purposely stupid. Also Idk if you know this but your mute button makes the game louder.

zoyer responds:

haha, glad you noticed the mute button ;)

I liked this game but there's a lot more that I believe should go into it.
One of my number one things is probably room size, I think the sections you exist in are far too small, it'd be much more enjoyable if they were just a tad bit wider by either using smaller actors, or scrolling. Second It needs collision animations, I have no idea, when an anime hits me, or how. Making the battles less about tactic and more about "I just need enough stats."
Also the collision sizes of characters. A lot of characters can hit me, even if I supposedly dodge them. You should make that work a little bit better. Also the shield, barely works, very bad tool.
Another thing this game also needs is a plot and cutscenes. Seeing as it's an RPG, you can never have an RPG just for the sake of having them. Also there should be a hub village of some sort, and maybe quests and other things. This game also needs SFX and music, I saw that you said it was hard, but this game ABSOLUTELY needs those things, and lastly, pump the art up a lot. If you follow most of my advice I believe that this will be a very great game.

m4dgoblin responds:

Yeah, the collision works the same as "Bullet storm" games, if it hits a pixel in the centre of you, you get hit. It's not dodgey, works perfectly how I want it too. I may make the screen wider, the "Engine" I've made for it doesn't allow screen scrolling, otherwise I'd have to reprogram the whole game. You can dodge every enemy in the game, and kill them level one. It is skill based, not stat based. Shield, I agree, it's horrible. Plot and cutscenes, I will definitely add a plot, cutscenes might not come though. SFX and music, I have no skill in creating any of these except for some pixely sounding 8-bit noises, which are already in the game. Pumping up the art, I might be getting a drawing tablet, so I might be able to make it a bit prettier. :P
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I'll try to work on it. :)

I thought it was fairly good, but it felt like the levels were a little short, like literally as in height wise, which made the character have really weird jumping and the jumps were very slow. Also the enemies just happen to know you're there as soon as you get close, and shoot fairly fast, The only way to kill someone is to spam the crap out of your gun, because you can't dodge the projectiles very well.

miketinovic responds:

Thanks for the fair criticism! It takes some time to learn how enemies behave and at what tempo they're shooting, not sure what you meant by "level height", though. Thanks for the feedback anyway.

doesn't work. Maybe it's the best game ever, but followed your instructions any my character doesn't fly.

Draspur responds:

It works fine for me. What specifically are you having trouble with?
